The town of Doncaster is in the English county of Yorkshire and is located about 20 miles form Sheffield. Popularly referred to by some of its residents as ‘Donny; the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster has not yet been granted City status despite is size, history and frequent applications.
Doncaster is now served by a new International airport the Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield, which opened on April 28, 2005, on the former Royal Air Force station of RAF Finningley, in Doncaster. The town also boasts a new £32 million pound Lakeside Sports Complex and the town center has been undergoing a massive regeneration scheme which notably includes the Education City campus which is the largest education investment of its kind in the UK.
The population in the town of Doncaster its self is nearly 70,000 and the surrounding Boroughs population reaches over 290,000.
Since the 16 th century, Doncaster was involved in the wealthy stagecoach trade. Doncasters involvement in stagecoaches led to horse breeding and in turn to the start of horse races. The St. Leger Stakes, first held in the 1770’s, is considered Doncasters first great race and makes the town’s races famous today.
With history dating as far back as the Roman Empire and landmarks such as Conisbrough Castle, Doncaster is a perfect town for sight seeing. Weather you do it on foot or in a hired limo is up to you!
