Scunthorpe

The ‘Industrial garden Town’ of Scunthorpe (also known as Scunny by local residents) is a town in North Lincolnshire with a population of over 70,000. The town features in the Domesday Book of 1086 under the name of Escumetorp, which is Old Nosre (a Germanic language spoken by the Vikings up until about 1300) for ‘Skuma’s Village’.

Ironstone was mined in Scunthorpe as early as the Roman times and in 1859 when Iron Ore was rediscovered the town grew a thriving iron and steel industry. The local football team Scunthorpe United are also aptly named ‘The Iron’.

In 1996 Scunthorpe earns its place in history due to a new immerging industry, the internet. When the obscenity filters of the internet giant AOL refused to accept the name of the town due to it’s inclusion of a character string which the filter rejected as obscene. Certain websites would display the name as S****horpe. This situation became known in the computer industry as the ‘Scunthorpe Problem’.
