Sheffield gets its name from its humble beginning’s in a field on the River Sheaf. The population of the Metropolitan Borough of Sheffield totals over 1,800,000 with the city itself totaling 500,000 people. Sheffield was recognized with city charter in 1893, by which time the Sheffield had experienced a ten fold population growth due mainly to its booming steel industry in which Sheffield developed many innovations such as stainless and crucible steel.
International competition placed pressure on the local steel industry and with the closing of the pits due to that national coal industry collapsing in the 1970’s and 1980’s Sheffield’s economy went into decline. More recently the city has sort to redefine itself as a sporting and technology city, moving away from its industrial past. This move has increased Sheffield’s employment with many jobs now in the service and business sector whilst the city has kept its character from the remaining history of its industrial past.
